HomeAre you ready for Cinco De Mayo?

Cinco De Mayo (meaning the "5th of May" in Spanish) is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and throughout the United States.

In Mexico, the celebration is occurs mainly in Puebla and commemorates the Mexican Army's victory over the French during the Battle of Puebla.

In the U.S., it's a day to celebrate Mexican heritage and culture.  It's the perfect time to highlight Mexican foods, drinks, and liquors at your establishment.  To help you, we're focusing on tequila this month and a traditional Mexican cocktail.

Know your tequila:
Whether you're picking a tequila for your next party or you're trying to upsell your customers on a higher shelf liquor, knowing your tequilas will make it that much easier.

How it's made:
Tequila can come in either a white/clear or gold color, and it's made from distilling the chopped, pressed and fermented hearts of blue agave tequilana plants. Then it's distilled a second time in a pot still, charcoal filtered. Finally, it's matured in wooden casks, briefly for the white version, and up to five years for the golden version.

How to judge quality:
Tequila is available in a wide-range of price points and quality, with prices ranging from $20 to over $100.  For the best quality, you'll want to look for tequila made with 100% agave, without any added sugars. These tequilas are commonly referred to as "Super Premium."

Now that you know a little more about tequila, it's time to put that knowledge to work. Why not try the Paloma? This traditional Mexican cocktail offers a refreshing change from a regular margarita.

In a Tall Glass, filled with ice, build:
  • 2 ounces 100% agave reposado tequila
  • Juice from half of a medium lime
  • Grapefruit-flavored soda (Squirt, Fresca, etc.)
Garnish with a lime wheel.  You can also add a splash of grapefruit juice, a dash of salt, or serve the drink with a salted rim.

As this is a sipping drink, you'll want to use a high-quality tequila.  Also, be aware that this recipe includes 2 ounces of hard liquor and should count as two "drinks" when serving customers and estimating their BAC.  To serve this drink responsibly, be sure that your customers have a designated driver.  To reduce the alcohol content, you can make the drink with 1 oz of tequila instead.
