HomeResponsible Serving® and Boating

Summer is here, which means it's time for trips to the ocean, river or lake.  Here at Rserving, we love to be out on the water.  We also hope that all of our students remember to serve and consume responsibly when they're out on the water.

Remember that a boat or personal watercraft is considered a vehicle, and that boating under the influence (BUI) is illegal in every state.  Make sure that you are aware of and follow your state laws.  Also, don't underestimate the unique dangers of mixing boating and alcohol. According to the US Coast Guard, "The marine environment - motion, vibration, engine noise, sun, wind and spray - accelerates a drinker's impairment."

Boat passengers also need to keep safety in mind. Being intoxicated, with the associated clumsiness and disorientation, can be very dangerous when out on the water.  According to the South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks Department, it's been suggested that alcohol use is a contributing factor in as many as 1 of 5 boating fatalities.

To stay safe and have fun this summer, follow these tips:
  • Know and follow your state laws and safe boating practices
  • Have a variety of non-alcoholic drinks, including water, available
  • Have food and snacks available
  • Plan events and activities with safety in mind - consider saving alcoholic beverages for when you return to shore
  • Monitor your friends, guests or customers closely for signs of intoxication
  • Stop serving intoxicated individuals immediately and make sure that a friend or family member keeps an eye on them

When serving drinks in any situation, it's important to watch for signs of intoxication and know when a friend or customer should be cut off.  Some signs of intoxication include swaying, staggering, bumping into things or people, falling, spilling drinks, slurring speech, disheveled appearance, out-of-character behavior, and mood swings.

Do not serve intoxicated individuals or allow them to drink more, do not allow them to drive a boat or personal watercraft, and make sure that someone is watching out for them.

By serving and consuming responsibly, you can have a fun and safe summer.  For more information on the effects of alcohol and recognizing intoxication, check out our Responsible Serving® of Alcohol course.
